Description:
Builds and rehabs affordable homes with low-income families in Lake County, Illinois. Families purchase homes from Habitat for Humanity Lake County with an interest-free mortgage and no down payment. Also must complete specific programs throughout the year while purchasing homes, including:
- Education Program: complete all 30 and more different classes
- Budget Program: attend monthly sessions with counselor to learn how to budget and reduce debt
- Sweat Equity: Complete 500 hours at ReStore in Gurnee to help build and rehab houses
Eligibility:
Must have an income between $58,350 - $110,050 (based on family size)
Must be a Lake County resident for last two years and a legal U.S. resident
Current housing must be substandard or inadequate (overcrowded, unsafe, or unaffordable), accessibility is needed, or family income is insufficient to afford a conventional mortgage.
Family must agree to contribute Sweat Equity with Habitat team members and our volunteers for at least 500 hours of building Habitat homes, working in our ReStore, and completing 40 weekly financial education classes, monthly budgeting sessions & other homeowner education classes.
