Student Peer Helper Services
Taxonomy Code: HL-8120.8120
Peer run programs that provide a safe and non-judgemental space for students to talk confidentially about their personal problems to another student who has experienced and resolved the same type of problem. Peer student volunteers are trained to offer supportive listening, help students work through their concerns and develop an action plan to improve their situation, and make referrals for further support, such as counseling or professional help. Concerns may include mental health or substance use-related challenges, bullying, or other academic or personal issues. These programs may also specialize in assisting students that may not feel fully included or represented in student life due to bullying, mental health, substance use, limited English proficiency, ethnic background, identity within the LGBTQ+ community, or issues related to being an international, commuter, or long-distance student.
