Description:
Provides independent, individualized literacy program tutoring for children in prekindergarten through grade two. Offers one-to-one tutoring during the school day at participating schools with a focus on:
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
Programs offer 60-100 individual tutoring sessions per year.
Preschool Program focuses on:
- Oral language development
- Listening comprehension
- Vocabulary
- Love of books
Volunteers work with students several times per week in the classroom.
Kindergarten Program focuses on;
- Story listening skills
- Phonemic awareness
- Phonic skills
Students receive 25 minute sessions up to four times per week.
First and Second grade program focuses on:
- Students read texts at their instructional level.
- Focus on developing fluency, writing, & comprehension
- Direct word study instruction with the use of phonics and building sight word vocabulary, also emphasized.
Students receive 40 minutes up to five days a week.
Also offers Literacy Activity Kits and Read-Aloud videos online for more learning support.
Eligibility:
Children from Pre-K to second grade student and enrolled in District 187 or District 6
Selection for the program is based on results from student testing done at the schools

Program Fees:
No fee.
Intake Process:
Student testing is conducted at the start of the school year with classroom teachers and will be selected based on results.

Volunteer Opportunities:
1. Volunteer Tutor - Volunteer tutors make a one half day commitment (morning or afternoon for about three hours), each week for the school year. Initial and ongoing training is provided.
